Coach Frank Reich was let go by the Indianapolis Colts following their third straight loss and another subpar offensive effort. Interim head coach Jeff Saturday was once an ESPN analyst and a 13-year Colts player.
One day, following a dismal 26-3 loss at New England, when the team was 0 for 14 on third down and managed just 121 yards of offense, the Colts made the announcement. The lowest scoring offense in the league is owned by Indianapolis (3-5-1).
“I was brought here for an offensive performance,” he stated following Sunday’s defeat. I am in charge of that. We now possess the players. Our players are more than adequate. I must work harder. I’m offended first. I have to do a better job of preparing the boys to play, setting them up for success, and having solutions when we run into issues.
Reich was appointed offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, who won the Super Bowl in 2018. In two of his first four seasons, he guided the Colts to the playoffs; last season, he came dangerously close. But Indy missed the postseason after losing their final two games.
In three weeks, Indianapolis has made three significant moves. Longtime NFL veteran Matt Ryan, the league’s 2016 MVP, was benched by Reich two weeks ago. Though Reich called the plays, he let go of offensive coordinator Marcus Brady last week. Last Tuesday, right before the trading deadline, general manager Chris Ballard also dealt running back Nyheim Hines.
A changing group of quarterbacks was another challenge Reich faced. First off, in 2019, franchise quarterback Andrew Luck retired. The previous season, Carson Wentz—who had thrived under Reich in Philadelphia—struggled miserably. Ryan was benched for Sam Ehlinger last month.
