Luke Kuechly of the Carolina Panthers shocked teammates and NFL fans on Tuesday night by announcing his retirement at the age of 28.
In an emotional video sent to the Panthers Twitter account Friday night, Kuechly stated, “Play fast, play physical, and play strong. This is the only way to play this game since I was a little kid.” And I’m not sure if I can still accomplish that at this time. That is the hardest portion to complete.
Kuechly, who was chosen with the ninth overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, has played for the Panthers for each of his eight seasons. In his rookie season, he was named the Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, and he assisted the Panthers in winning the 2015 Super Bowl.
The renowned linebacker acknowledged that he still desired to be an NFL player, but Kuechly expressed his opinion that it wasn’t the “right decision.”
He remarked, “I gave it a lot of thought. This is your chance to leave what’s happening here.
Although Kuechly did not give a specific explanation for his decision to leave the field, ESPN points out that he has a history of head injuries. He had seven concussions between 2015 and 2017, which kept him out of the game.

“I believe that this is the appropriate time for me to move on,” Kuechly added in the video.
It makes me sad because I’ve been playing this game since I was a child and I really enjoy it. It’s my absolute favorite activity. My recollections of this location, this group, and playing on the field with these people will always be with me.

Kuechly made the unexpected announcement, and players from all over the league promptly wished him well.

In addition to referring to Kuechly as a “fearless player,” Rob Gronkowski made light of the situation by posing a query to him, one he has encountered frequently during his own retirement.
Gronkowski tweeted, “Congratulations, Luke Kuechly, on early retirement.” “Sooo, when are you returning?”
Kuechly joins a growing list of young football players who gave up the game despite still having years of playing left in them. Both New England Patriots star Rob Gronkowski and Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback Andrew Luck have retired at the age of 29 in the previous two years alone.
