Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is endorsing President Biden for re-election, and he explained why he’s behind the candidate he supported in 2020.
“It’s clear that President Biden is really interested in implementing gun safety measurements, commonsense gun violence prevention measures,” Kerr stated on MSNBC.
“Over the past ten years, I’ve worked closely with numerous gun safety and prevention organizations, including Brady [United], Giffords, Sandy Hook Promise, and March For Our Lives. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge, and I am confident that we can stop gun violence from taking lives.
“President Biden is adamant that he will work to pass sensible legislation that will enable that. I’m certain that [former] President Trump won’t act in that manner. For me, it’s actually an easy decision.”
When asked if he planned to vote for former President Trump in this year’s election, Kerr said he would prefer to vote for Biden.
“I’m voting for Joe Biden, but I think the biggest thing for me, everybody needs to vote their conscious,” he stated. “This is the primary topic on which I will be voting. I was 18 years old when I lost my father to gun violence, so I am aware of the suffering that individuals in this nation endure on a daily basis.
“I am aware that the leading cause of child death in America is gun violence. And I am aware that there is a great deal we can do to address this. Whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican, I believe the majority of people share my opinion. At the Juneteenth White House event, President Biden seemed to become stagnant.
“Regardless of party affiliation, 80% of Americans want background checks for all applicants. We kind of have to steer the cruise liner there, but we can accomplish this. President Biden is prepared to put in the effort to attempt to obtain the improvements that the great majority of Americans desire, even though it will take some time to implement.”
Kerr used his recent grandfatherhood to bolster his argument, saying, “I’m thinking a lot about when she goes off to kindergarten.” She will also need to participate in mass shooting drills.
Since Biden’s election, Kerr has also supported him. In November 2023, Kerr surprised everyone by showing up at an APEC meeting and introducing Biden. Along with Vice President Kamala Harris, Kerr addressed students last week against gun violence.
Kerr thinks that Biden’s reelection will result in the “commonsense laws” that all Americans, regardless of party, will find beneficial.
