Marcus “M.J.” Daniels, a defensive back for Southern Miss, was shot and died on Tuesday night in Mississippi, according to officials.
The shooting happened at a Hattiesburg apartment building. News outlets were informed by Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem that Daniels’ body was transported to a medical examiner for an autopsy.
Hattiesburg police released a statement through the Hattiesburg American that read, “We are asking the community for their help and to come forward with any information pertaining to this tragic incident and the untimely death of Marcus Daniels.” “We won’t compromise the inquiry in any way by disclosing as much information as we can. We are collaborating closely with both municipal and university authorities.”
The Daniels, 21, started all of the Golden Eagles’ cornerback games in the previous campaign. With three interceptions, he was tied for the team lead. In 12 games, he also recorded 29 tackles. The Hattiesburg American stated that he was anticipated to start the 2024 season.
Counseling will be provided to his teammates and other school personnel impacted by his passing, the school said in a statement. “We send our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time,” the statement read.
