Eddie Howe was dealt a fresh blow before the game when Joe Willock was ruled out with an Achilles injury while Sean Longstaff did not recover in time from an ankle issue suffered at Bournemouth.
The game had started well for Newcastle after Lewis Miley picked out Alexander Isak who fired the Magpies ahead on 12 minutes but a Raheem Sterling free-kick levelled matters.
Yet the goals flowed after the break as Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon wrapped up a memorable victory.
