First big recruiting weekend of the Fran Brown era shows top prospects Syracuse’s potential
A five-star, a few four-stars, potential flips, Fran Brown and his new staff wasted no time hitting the ground running on the recruiting trail.
The first recruiting weekend of the Fran Brown era at Syracuse was star-studded, with many of the nation’s top prospects making their way to the Orange campus.
And the returns are strong.
“My experience at Syracuse was really nice and I enjoyed my time,” Buford (Ga.) High five-star safety KJ Bolden said. The Florida State commit is 247Sports No. 1 safety and No. 13 prospect overall. “I didn’t know what to expect going so far up north but I like it! The energy up there is amazing and you can tell everyone is excited to have Coach Fran.”
Bolden built a great rapport with Brown over the last two years during his time as Georgia’s defensive backs coach
“I’m always impressed with how Coach Fran is a family man, man of god and just a great leader. Coach Fran is a great recruiter and one that is going to always be upfront about everything.
“Syracuse has something special in the making and Coach Fran is the one that will have Syracuse in playoff talks in years to come.”
Bolden made the trek up with his friend, Hoschton (Ga.) Mill Creek four-star edge KingJoseph Edwards. Syracuse is trending on the 247Sports Crystal Ball for Edwards, who is being recruited by Nick Williams. Those two got close during Williams time at Colorado, and Brown also knows the Peach State product for obvious reasons.
“My experience was top-tier,” Joseph Edwards said. “No complaints. I spent a lot of time with my position coach and the team. What impressed me is their ambition to improve and be better. They have to build and they have the team to do it.”
Edwards isn’t the only coveted prospect the 247Sports Crystal Ball favors Syracuse for. Atco (NJ) Winslow Township receiver and Texas A&M commit Jaylan Hornsby is another to keep an eye on and he loved his weekend experience.
“My weekend at Syracuse was awesome,” Hornsby said. “The thing that continues to impress me is how much Coach Fran is embedded into the players. He really cares about them and is doing everything he can to help them be successful. I know that if I choose to come to Cuse I’ll leave a better football player and a better man! The coaching staff is top of the line also!
Brown and his camp are looking for a few flips late in the cycle as they get settled in at Syracuse. Cincinnati (Ohio) La Salle Top247 safety Koy Beasley is a verbal to Purdue that’s now thinking hard about the Orange.
“It was good,” Beasley said. “What impresses me is really the hype that’s being built around the program and the opportunity to be coached by Coach Fran and opportunity to play.”
Another prospect Brown has a long-standing relationship with is Chattanooga (Tenn.) McCallie School defensive back Marcellus Barnes Jr. He’ll announce a college commitment on Jan. 6 at the All-American Bowl and Syracuse will have a hat on the table alongside the likes of Georgia and Ole Miss.
