TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Running back Trey Benson of Florida State is forgoing the Orange Bowl in order to focus on his NFL Draft preparations.
The redshirt junior declared on social media on Sunday that he will not be participating in his last season of eligibility.
“I cannot begin to express how valuable my two years here have been, especially the relationships I’ve made with teammates, coaches, athletic training, academic staff and the whole FSU family,” said Benson.
This season, Benson gained 905 yards and 14 touchdowns through the air. At the end of his college career, he has 24 touchdowns and 1,917 yards.
Benson declared, “I will always carry FSU with me wherever I go.” “Once again, I want to thank Florida State and the amazing fans. I cherish you all so much.”
Benson began his career at Oregon, but after just six runs for 22 yards and a touchdown in 2021, he went to Florida State.
Despite not breaking 1,000 yards in each of his two Seminole seasons, he was a dangerous aerial threat with 33 receptions for 371 yards.

The Seminoles defeated the Gators 24–15 in their first game without quarterback Jordan Travis, who sustained a season-ending injury one week prior. Benson ran for a season-high three touchdowns versus Florida. After having trouble during the game, Tate Rodemaker, the backup quarterback, was hit late in the fourth quarter and eventually sustained a concussion.
Benson is one of many Seminoles who, after being left out of the four-team College Football Playoff, have decided not to play in the bowl game. Johnny Wilson, a wide receiver, and Fabien Lovett, a defensive tackle, will also be graduating early.
On December 30, the No. 4 Seminoles (ranked No. 5 in the College Football Playoff) will play No. 6 Georgia in the Orange Bowl.
